Observatoire de la Capitale Transformed

Observatoire de la Capitale Transformed

Québec City, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 – Beginning Wednesday, April 13, Observatoire de la Capitale will take visitors on a fantastic journey through time. Discover the new concept and revamped design inspired by the year 1965, a pivotal moment in the life of Québec and its capital city.

Along with the ever-spectacular views of Québec City from the 31st and top floor of the Marie-Guyart Building, visitors will enjoy a look back all the way to the 1830s as they experience Québec City’s storied history through views, objects, and key figures.

The visual experience from 221 meters up remains one of a kind. From the Observatory, a symphony of colors and shapes unfolds through the seasons. Looking down on the majestic St. Lawrence River, the glorious Laurentians, and the Old City, the vista is continually renewed. And now this panorama will be enriched with interactive terminals providing fascinating information on the ever-changing points of view on display.

A journey through time

Visitors will now be received on the ground floor of the Marie-Guyart Building in an airport-like setting, where they will also find a boutique with Observatoire de la Capitale souvenirs. On the 31st floor, a virtual flight attendant will welcome them. The journey backward in time will begin in 1965, a turning point in the history of Québec and its capital. From there, visitors will head back to 1946, 1908, 1865, and beyond.

Travelers will discover the rich history of Québec City through the latest technology: interactive touch screen terminals, sound booths, and 3D imagery. Each multimedia stop will bring key people and places from the capital’s history to life right before their eyes. By the time the trip is over, they will never look at Québec City the same way again.

For this new and promising interpretive concept, Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec has partnered up with Bergeron Gagnon, a cultural heritage and museology consultancy firm. This major makeover was made possible with the support of two financial partners, the National Assembly of Québec and DMR-Fujitsu. The Observatory’s new visual signature and updated website will be unveiled at the official opening. Until then a sneak peak video of the project can be seen at www.observatoirecapitale.org/en/1965.

The new interpretive display adds an extra dimension to an already outstanding attraction. Available to rent for cocktails, launches, press conferences, and children’s parties, the facility will now be more exciting than ever.

Beginning April 13, Observatoire de la Capitale will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission will be $10 for adults, $8 for students and those 65 and over, and will remain free for children under 12 accompanied by their parents. For unlimited access to Observatoire de la Capitale throughout the year, the Panoramic Visa can be purchased onsite for $19.95.

Observatoire de la Capitale is run by Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec. Over the last ten years, it has become one of Québec City’s most popular attractions, welcoming over 70,000 visitors each year. With this dazzling and groundbreaking makeover, it will be the city’s high point more than ever before—an absolute must to see and share with others.

Commission de la capitale nationale du Québec pursues a threefold mission of helping develop and beautify Québec City, promoting the capital through a diverse program of discovery and commemoration activities, and advising the Québec government on how to enhance the city’s status.
